We accept the insight that there is a spark of humanity in everyone, in each one of us. Some question what that Spark might be and want to define or analyze it. Instead, we prefer to accept and affirm the validity of the insight, noting that it implies a possible connection with any other human and the potential for greater light and warmth.
We start the process by claiming our personal Spark. We do this by affirming and connecting with the Spark in someone else. We practice expanding this connection to others, gently challenging ourselves to become increasingly fluent in this practice, noting our defenses and distortions.
To stabilize and strengthen ourselves for this work, we envision having a root system providing access to the resources we need. We lump these needed resources as stability, access to wisdom/truth, and community. The resources we need for this work are always available to us. When our root systems are robust, we not only stabilize the terrain in which we are planted, but we also stand firm against any mudslide we feel tugging at us of any sort. We know that when we stand together, together we can stop any tugging mudslide.
This work transforms us as we work to transform others. The greater our willingness to be transformed by the work, for the work, the more effective we are as agents of transformation for others. For some of us, this feels spooky as well as exciting. So, we deeply value our community of understanding.
In the video below, as you watch Axie, Ami, and Martha explore the concept of a Spark of Humanity and share some stories, may you catch some of the hope we experience and offer.
